American Flag "Sutured" Apparel
A friend of mine arrived at our mending circle with a t-shirt that she had ripped off of
her boyfriend's back in a fight. Her hope was to work through the literal and
metaphorical tears in their relationship by stitching the t-shirt back together. This crop
top is inspired by her t-shirt.
Any good seamstress or tailor will tell you when you bring
them your tattered garments that there are damages that are simply beyond repair.
Other damages, however, can be repaired quickly and easily with the aid of a patch or
thread. Let's hope the tears in our American fabric are the latter. This secondhand
patriotic crop top was slashed in half and sewn back together again with red thread. Red
represents the blood shed to make this country a more equitable place in the which
resources are equally distributed throughout all strata of society.
